With an objective to find technology solutions and co-create impactful and practical solutions with selected innovation providers that best-fit members’ needs in legal practices, The Law Society has partnered with the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks (“HKSTP”) Global Acceleration Academy (“GAA”) in 2019 to launch a 12-month pilot initiative named “Future of Law” Project.
On 3 and 17 September, two online Discovery Sessions were conducted under the Project, whereby members were introduced with knowledge on system integration and corporate innovation, as well as new technologies such as AI, Open API and Robotics, and how they could be adopted in the legal profession. Over 60 participants attended the two events.
In the first Discovery Session themed “Legal Innovations in Action Today”, Ms. Winnie Ho, Deputy Director of Architectural Services, Architectural Services Department (“ArchSD”) told members how ArchSD embarked on its ‘Journey to Innovative Construction’, alongside with an introduction on Open API automation by Mr. Patrick Fan of beNovelty Limited, a local Open API advisory startup. Members also benefited from the sharing of our Vice-President and Chairman of InnoTech Committee Mr. Amirali Nasir, on the setting of framework for coding for lawtech.
Two weeks later, the GAA hosted another Discovery Session with a different theme “The Workplace with AI & Robotics”, in which members learnt about the accelerating digital transformation of law segment from Mr. Matthew Tam and Mr. Andy Yip of HKT, and how AI could be applied in our work to speed up standard document procedures from Mr. Cheney Cheng of Apoidea, an AI fintech startup in Hong Kong.
Through an introduction on the Technology Validation Platform developed by HKSTP, Dr. Crystal Fok, who leads HKSTP’s AIR Platform and Precision Engineering team, demonstrated how corporates and end users may evaluate the performance of AIR solutions with physical and virtual testing, and how this platform could facilitate mass adoption of AIR technology in key industries.
