The Law Society organised three visits to the nine cities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Bay Area ("the Greater Bay Area") in 2018. The third visit was held on 3 and 4 December, covering Zhuhai, Jiangmen and Zhongshan. Led by President Melissa Pang, the 26-member delegation visited the Zhuhai International Court of Arbitration and met with three local lawyers associations to exchange views on the latest developments in their respective legal sectors. Participating parties wished to strengthen mutual ties and promote the development of the legal sector in the region.
Subsequently, representatives of the Law Society, Guangdong Lawyers Association, Macau Lawyers Association and the lawyers associations from the nine cities in the Greater Bay Area attended the first joint meeting for lawyers associations in the Greater Bay Area held in Guangzhou on 15 December. The joint meeting aimed to gather the lawyers associations in the Greater Bay Area regularly to discuss issues related to the development of the industry, in addition to fostering cooperation and exchanges. Representatives of the Law Society included Vice President CM Chan, Council member Careen Wong, Secretary General Heidi Chu and members of the Greater China Legal Affairs Committee Rico Chan and Alan Lau.
At the meeting, the delegates presented the development of the legal profession in the three places, as well as their work plans in 2019. Discussion was also made on ways to leverage the advantages of lawyers of different cities and strengthen collaboration. In addition, representatives signed the "Joint Meeting System for Lawyers Associations in the Greater Bay Area" and read the "Manifesto by Lawyers in the Greater Bay Area", undertaking to bring together the strengths of lawyers in the three places in promoting the region’s legal profession development, as well as the economic and social development of the country.
